1/5/2023 0 Comments Beersmith no sparge![]() ![]() I know from experience what total pre-boil volume I will need in my kettle to allow for evaporation, shrinkage, trub, etc in order to give me the volume I want into my fermenter. I measure the resulting volume of first runnings in my kettle. (I have checked a couple of times to ensure it is reasonable in terms of ain ratio.) I use the beersmith recommended strike volume. I may be screwing something up with my process, and if anyone thinks so, I'd appreciate their comment, but here is what I do. Truth to tell, I don't much bother with following Beersmith's sparge volume suggestion anyway. I have double checked my profiles etc etc. If I recall correctly, in my case, Beersmith does not call for two sparge volumes, other times it does - no idea why. I think I read someplace that Beersmith may be doing this because you mash tun is not large enough to accept the full sparge volume at one shot - but that is not the case with me, I make 5 gallon batches and use a 10 gallon igloo type MT. Quite often one of the two volumes it suggests seems ridiculously small in volume. ![]() I have been using Beersmith2 for nearly a year and still encounter that "2 sparge volume thing." I've never understood why, and I just ignore it. ![]()
